Sophia Schryver
was born in 1787 in Onondaga County NY. April 14, 1771 and baptized on May 26 of that year in
Rhinebeck Flats, Duchess County, NY. She was the fifth child and first
daughter of Martinus and Margrietje Schryver.
From the Burch book, "'James Terpenning' was
the name of husbands of both Blondina and Sophia. After her
father's death, Sophia and her husband, James Terpenning, took care of
Margritta (her mother) at home in Cicero, Onondaga County. (A
place which Margritta had to reach by traveling by water.--Statement in
Martinus' application papers for pension.) Margritta lived there
until she died. Father's war record says Sophia was 8th of 10
children, but that seems to be in error. One record says she was
51 years old on 22 Oct 1838, which would make her born in 1787, which
doesn't make her the 8th child. Peggy Maria's date is also
confusing. James name was shown as Terpeny."
An
observation ... I find it curious that Sophia was born in Onondaga
County while all of her siblings were born in the Esopus area.
Onondaga County is the Syracuse area in central New York. Esopus
is in the southern Hudson area. Although her birth location might
be accurate, it would make more sense that she met and married James in
the southern Hudson region and they later moved to Onondaga
County. This is also reinforced by the fact that their daughter
Peggy was born in Kingston, which is also in the southern Hudson
area. Please note that this is just an observation.
