Jonas (James) Scriber was born in 1832. He
was the seventh child and fourth son of Martinus and Lena Falk Schryver.
According to the Burch book, "in census of 1860
in Saugerties, Jonas is a farmer of 30 years living with his mother,
Lana, ae 67 -- both ages are 2 years off. His father must have
died before 1860. In the census of Kingston in 1880, he is with
wife Annie, ae 34 (b. 1826), and 5 children, not Ira. Jonas is a
teamster. "Jonas" is written as "James" in
poor handwriting; the name could be either.
In the Cairo census of 1892, Jonas (James) was living
with his sister, Eliza T. Scriber. On two or more occasions Jonas
was jailed for (1) selling liquor without a license and (2) maintaining
a 'disorderly house'."
According to the Burch data, this may have been the
Jonas who married a Mrs. Susan Shoub on April 14, 1862. They were
both of Saugerties. Susan could have been a first wife who
died. A child's gravestone in Saugerties lists "Cora Pinola,
daughter of Jonas and Susan, d. 4 Sep ?, 0-4-1".
He died on March 30, 1909 at the Greene County Alms
House of Cairo NY. He was 77.
