Roy Wilkison Schryver was born on 22 February
1895.
He was the second child and second son of Frank M.
and Sara Jane Baltz Schryver.
For many years, his family believed that his middle
name was "Wilkenson" or "Wilkerson." After
he passed away, his birth certificate was found in his attic. It
turns out that his middle name was "Wilkison." The
family also always thought he had been born in Omar, NY.
However, according to his birth certificate, he was actually born in
Depauville, NY. According to his son Douglas, that was a real
surprise because they were not aware that any relatives ever lived
in Depauville. They feel that maybe he was born at a
midwife's place in Depauville and never lived there. However, the
obituary of his father, Frank M. Schryver, does indicate that he (Frank)
lived in Depauville about five years. Depauville and Omar are
about 12 miles apart.
According to Roy's obituary, he attended local
schools. In 1920, he moved to Buffalo where he worked as a
bookkeeper for a lumber company. Between 1927 and 1937, he was an
automobile salesman in Toronto, Ontario. He then worked in a
laundry service in St. Petersburgh, Florida, before returning to the
Omar area in 1949, at which time he joined Crowley Foods. He
retired as a cheesemaker in 1960.
He died on 28 February 1983 at the age of 88 at the E.
J. Noble Hospital in Alexandria Bay, New York. According to the
obituary, he was transported there by ambulance and was pronounced dead
on his arrival. A memorial service was conducted at 2 PM on
Sunday, March 6. Held at the Omar United Methodist Church, it was
presided by the Reverend Robert Nay, Pastor. Roy is buried in the
Omar Cemetery.
